The city of Siem Reap is alive with action and energy
The rich and famous used to come here in the 1960s and after staying on the lowdown for more than 30 years, Siem Reap is coming back like a boom town. There are tree-lined streets and a slow-moving river at its heart but the visitors now are dining, dancing, shopping and living it up in this nook of the country combining Cambodian life and modern amenities.
Two of the often-visited temples in town are Wat Bo – one of the oldest here, blending French and Thai architectural influences; and the more modern Wat Preah Prom Rath. Before taking the 6-kilometre trip to Ankor Archaeological Park to admire its temples, you might appreciate a walk though Siem Reap's Angkor National Museum. It examines the history of the Angkor complex and Khmer culture. If you fancy a taste of the culture, Meric at Hotel de la Paix is regarded by many as the best Khmer restaurant in Cambodia. If you can, time your holiday in Siem Reap with the Water Festival (late October/early November) and join the celebration of the remarkable natural phenomenon of the inverting river flow.
