A fascinating mix of ancient tradition and sparkling modernity

You'll find some of the country's most expensive real estate in the Gangnam district. Seoul is often overlooked on the traveller's itinerary but it's worth a stop, yielding a blend of long-honoured tradition and all the dazzle of 21-century modernity. The Han River roughly bisects the city into north-south components, and with more than 10 million calling this home, there's much to immerse yourself in.

Seoul: Bukchon Hanok VillageBukchon Hanok Village

The most famous of Seoul's 5 Joseon Dynasty-era palaces is Gyeongbokgung, north of the river. First built in 1395, the vast complex has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. In the same region of the city, you'll find a tip to history in the traditional 'hanok' houses lining the streets of Bukchon. A forage through Seoul's restaurants can be rewarding too; if you're watching your pennies, try manduguk – a delicious soup full of dumplings packed with meat and vegetables. Like any modern city, there are fine dining and luxury accommodation options to spoil yourself with too. So, up for a holiday in Seoul? See you soon!
