Stately buildings, quaint galleries and a reputation for great food
Settled by Europeans in 1806, Launceston is rife with historic buildings – Macquarie, Clarendon and Franklin Houses are all worth looking into. Launceston City Park was established in the 1820s, and is an important part of the city's heritage. If modern-day marvels are more your thing, try heading to the National Motor Museum or one of Launceston's many fine art galleries and unusual markets.
Heading out of the city centre brings visitors to the wilderness Tasmania is so renowned for. Most locals recommend the Cataract Gorge, a place that attracts hikers and rock climbers alike. For those wanting a more relaxed view of the area, a chairlift is available to take visitors to the top of the Gorge to a magnificent scenic lookout. A trip further into the Tamar Valley will expose the cool-climate wineries and boutique breweries of the region, the rich agricultural basin (can anyone say organic produce?) as well as the stunning Tamar River – a river cruise should definitely be on your to-do list.
Everything you need is in Launceston – food, wine, history, the great outdoors – there is no more perfect place to holiday.
