Bali as a Gay Destination
While Bali is a perennial favourite for travellers drawn to the beautiful beaches and chilled lifestyle, gay and lesbian holiday-makers can rejoice in the fact that the predominantly Hindu Balinese population welcome diversity. This cultural acceptance is further strengthened by the absence of any national laws prohibiting homosexuality. The local gay population, however, don't generally flaunt their sexuality in public and while there aren't any issues, they keep everything low key.
The Beaches
Bali's beaches are world famous and while there isn't a dedicated gay beach, gay travellers may enjoy Batu Belig Beach. Make a day of your beach adventure by having lunch at the nearby La Cantina restaurant. Other beaches that have a gay slant include Blue Ocean Beach and Legian Beach – both beaches are north of Kuta.
The Nightlife
Bali's gay scene is primarily centred around the street Jalan Dhyana Pura in Seminyak – the stretch is commonly referred to as Gay Street. Popular gay bars include Bali Joe, Face Bar and Mixwell Bar. Also consider checking out Bottoms Up, which features drag shows and Club Cosmo.
Accommodation
Gay and lesbian travellers will be welcomed to all Balinese hotels – however overt displays of affection should be generally avoided. Holiday-makers may like to stay in Seminyak to minimise travel back to the hotel after a big night out in a gay bar. Alternatively, there are a range of exclusive gay hotels including Spartacvs Hotel, Villa Layang Bulan, Phil's Place and Mango Villa.
