The Indigenous owners call it 'K'gari' – paradise – come and see why
People have been visiting the island for many years, and each year sees many return. It's no surprise – Fraser is one of Australia's most pristine areas, but is packed with so many things to do. Feel your thighs burn as you climb the sand dunes – the highest reaching nearly 250 metres high – purely for the exhilaration of rolling, running or sandboarding back down. Swim in one of the sparkling freshwater lakes, before taking a relaxing stroll through the rainforest. Wander around the beached Maheno Shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach, or whale watch (if the season is right). Get back to nature by camping near a beach or lake, or stay in one of the eco-friendly resorts spread across the island.
Peak visiting time is Christmas and school holidays, where it's not uncommon to see queues for the ferry home stretch kilometres down the beach, and 4WD access is mandatory as there are no sealed roads on the island. However if these are the only two tough parts of a holiday to Fraser Island, there's not a lot stopping you from visiting this stunning piece of paradise.
