Canals, Cafes, Windmills and Pedal Power... Welcome to Amsterdam
Cruising the canals is particularly pleasant too. Traditional brown cafes (so named for their wood panelling) are ripe for whiling away the hours and, due to Amsterdam's extensive artistic heritage, you can enjoy a fine collection of masterpieces at its galleries. A must-see is the renown museum, Rijksmuseum. The Van Gogh Museum has about 700 paintings and drawings by Vincent and his contemporaries, including Monet, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec.

If you've picked up one of Amsterdam's 800,000 bicycles and been using pedal power to navigate the city, you'll have an appetite. For traditional and modern Dutch food, try these Amsterdam restaurants: Loetje, Moeders, Greetje, Haesje Claes and De Silveren Spiegel. You can also find an excuse to eat cheese at any time of the day here (Gouda is Holland's favourite) and this city makes a host of its own brews. Once fed and watered, cycle over to P.C. Hooftstraat for exclusive shopping. If you're looking for out-of-the-ordinary accommodation, Amsterdam is the perfect city to stay on a houseboat.
