Highlights of Mexico

From glittering Acapulco to the southern Port of Chiapas and the scenic Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico provides plenty of highlights for cruise enthusiasts. Noted for its picturesque islands and scenic beauty, the Mexican Riviera is a particularly popular cruise destination.

A few of the highlights of cruising Mexico

  • One of the world's most popular cruises, you can start your Mexican Riviera cruise from the coastal city of Ensenada before venturing south to the lively town of Cabo San Lucas on the tip of the Baja California peninsula. 'Cabo' has a reputation as a party town and with its vibrant mix of golden beaches and upscale resorts, it's a popular stopover en route to Mexico's famous resort town Acapulco and beyond. It's also a big-game fishing paradise and hosts the world's largest marlin tournament.
  • Mexico's original resort town Acapulco has lost none of its spark and the sun-soaked coastal city is still a major cruise destination. The beaches of La Costera are a glitzy haunt for Mexico's most glamorous but the highlight remains La Quebrada's famous cliff divers. At La Quebrada groups of young men entertain tourists by flinging themselves off a sheer 35-metre cliff face into the shallow waters below. They've been risking life and limb in front of enthusiastic crowds since the 1930s.
  • At the southern tip of the Mexican Riviera is the burgeoning Port of Chiapas. Though not as well known as the bustling states further north, the Soconusco region where the port is located is home to ancient Mesoamerican cultures and a thriving coffee industry. Passengers stopping over in Port of Chiapas can relax along the town's long stretches of sandy beaches. Further inland is a lush rainforest interior which is best explored on an organised tour.

Weather

Temperatures remain balmy (mid 20s Celsius) most of the year. August and September are hotter, with temperatures in the 30s, coupled with humidity that can make shore excursions a bit unpleasant.

Cruise Season

This is a year round destination blessed by a balmy weather though August and September can be hotter and more humid. Some cruise lines have ships based here all year while others base ships here for the September to April period before moving them to Alaska or Europe.
