Found in north Queensland, Cairns is a cosmopolitan city located on the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The city is a popular tourism hub due to its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef as well as other attractions such as Kuranda Village and the Daintree. It is also home to a dizzying array of accommodation, tour companies and adventure activities. While the city doesn't have any swimming beaches to speak of, the large out-door salt-water lagoon pool located in the city centre is a welcomed substitute.

Head to Grafton Street or the Esplanade where you will find rows and rows of cafes and restaurants. For a taste of tropical Queensland, order a juice from one of the city's juice bars where they will squeeze the freshest tropical fruit right before your eyes. Seafood and meat lovers should try the Esplanade where they'll find a number of reputable seafood and grill restaurants.

If you have the time, arrange to go on a snorkelling or diving tour of the Great Barrier Reef. With so many tour companies on offer, there's no excuse not to see the world's largest living reef.
