At the edge of central South Australia, Olympic Dam is a major mining centre, home to the largest-known single uranium deposit.
As well as producing uranium, Olympic Dam has an underground mine extracting copper, gold and silver. It includes an integrated metallurgical processing plant too. At more than 500 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, with little in the immediate vicinity, flights to Olympic Dam are usually patronised by the mining community.
